Intra- and inter-specific competition in Rhizobium fredii and Bradyrhizobium japonicum as indigenous and introduced organisms

Schmidt 1973; Kapusta and Rouwenhorst 1973; Weaver and Frederick 1974). However, the numbers needed to overcome indigenous rhizobia are in many cases too excessive to be practical. In much of the soybean-growing area in the north central United States, an area encompassing many soil types, indigeneous strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum serogroup 123 dominate nodulation of soybeans (Damirgi et al. 1967; Ham et al. 1971b). Although several factors have been examined to account for the success of serogroup 123 (Ham 1980), strain characteristics that confer competitive advantage to 123 remain unknown. The competitive success of 123 was found to be unrelated to an ability to outgrow other indigenous B. japonicum in the host rhizosphere (Moawad et al. 1984). Also, when competition studies were carried out in sterile vermiculite or in soils devoid of naturalized B. japonicum, an isolate of 123 from a midwestern soil was found to be a poor competitor (Kosslak 990

Bradyrhizobium elkanii, Bradyrhizobium yuanmingense and Bradyrhizobium japonicum are the main rhizobia associated with Vigna unguiculata and Vigna radiata in the subtropical region of China.
Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and mung bean (Vigna radiata) are important legume crops yet their rhizobia have not been well characterized. In the present study, 62 rhizobial strains isolated from the root nodules of these plants grown in the subtropical region of China were analyzed via a polyphasic approach. The results showed that 90% of the analyzed strains belonged to or were related to Brady...

The role of glycine betaine and choline in osmoprotection of various Rhizobium, Sinorhizobium, Mesorhizobium, Agrobacterium, and Bradyrhizobium reference strains which display a large variation in salt tolerance was investigated. When externally provided, both compounds enhanced the growth of Rhizobium tropici, Sinorhizobium meliloti, Sinorhizobium fredii, Rhizobium galegae, Agrobacterium tumef...
متن کاملSerological Relatedness of Rhizobium fredii to Other Rhizobia and to the Bradyrhizobia.
Several isolates of Rhizobium fredii were examined for their serological relatedness to each other, to Bradyrhizobium japonicum, and to other fast- and slow-growing rhizobia. Immunofluorescence, agglutination, and immunodiffusion analyses indicated that R. fredii contains at least three separate somatic serogroups, USDA 192, USDA 194, and USDA 205. There was no cross-reaction between any of the...

We determined the sequences for a 260-base segment amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (corresponding to positions 44 to 337 in the Escherichia coli 16s rRNA sequence) from seven strains of fast-growing soybean-nodulating rhizobia (including the type strains of Rhizobium fredii chemovar fredii, Rhizobium fredii chemovar siensis, Sinorhizobium fredii, and Sinorhizobium xinjiangensis) and ...
متن کاملEffects of pH and Osmotic Stress on Cellular Polyamine Contents in the Soybean Rhizobia Rhizobium fredii P220 and Bradyrhizobium japonicum A1017.
Homospermidine is a polyamine present in its highest concentrations in root nodule bacteria. By using the soybean rhizobia Rhizobium fredii P220 and Bradyrhizobium japonicum A1017, the effects of the pH and osmolarity of the medium on rhizobial growth and cellular polyamine contents were investigated. Elevation of medium pH repressed the growth of slowly growing B. japonicum A1017 and resulted ...
